Computers in Chemical Education
Purpose:

The CCCE seeks to encourage, publicize and support the development, implementation and assessment of computing technologies in chemical education.

Composition:

A committee chair, appointed by the Division chair, and 21 additional members who have experience and an interest in fulfilling the goals of the committee and who represent the spectrum of Division membership. The committee chair nominates committee members for approval by the Division chair.

Term of Office:

The chair serves a three-year term and may have previously served as a member of the committee. Members are appointed for three-year terms that are staggered to ensure continuity.

Responsibilities:
  • Publish the committee newsletter, Using Computers in Chemical Education, Organize symposia and other sessions at national and regional meetings
  • Organize multi-day national workshops on the use of computers in chemical education
  • Organize and manage topic specific on-line conferences on chemical education and research
  • Announce and report on on-line chemistry courses offered by members of the committee
  • Maintain a summary of Committee activities on the CCCE website.
Timetable:

Most CCCE activities run continuously throughout the year. Those that interface directly with the national meetings and the Division committee activities are listed below.

January:

  • The committee chair submits the committee annual report to the Division secretary by February 1st to assist in the preparation of the Division annual report. Note: The committee's annual report is the responsibility of the chair who served during the year covered by the report. The report should include an accounting of the past year's planned goals and objectives, as well as those planned for the coming year. The committee chair requests from the Secretary a meeting room for the committee meeting at the spring national meeting of the Society. The chair or a member of the committee solicits volunteers for appointment to the committee in the Spring issues of both the Committee and Division newsletters.

February/March:

  • The chair submits a committee report for review at the Division Executive Committee meeting and, if appropriate, items to the Division chair for inclusion on the spring Executive Committee agenda. On even-numbered years, the chair requests a room for an open meeting of the committee at the BCCE.

March/April:

  • If appropriate, a committee representative presents the committee items submitted for inclusion in the spring Executive Committee agenda.

June:

  • In even years the chair distributes the agenda for the open meeting to be held at the BCCE.

July/August:

  • The chair submits a committee report for review at the Division Executive Committee meeting to the Secretary; any items for inclusion on the fall Executive Committee agenda and a list of candidates for new committee members to replace those completing their terms of office in the current calendar year to the Division chair; and the budget request for the following calendar year to the treasurer. If scheduled, meet at the BCCE. Recognize and thank committee members who are completing their terms of office in the current calendar year.

August/September:

  • If scheduled, meet at the fall national meeting of the Society. Recognize and thank committee members who are completing their terms of office in the current calendar year. The committee secretary distributes minutes and action items from the BCCE committee meeting to all committee members. The Committee members consult via e-mail on recommendations for new members and the results are communicated to the Division chair.

December:

  • The chair forwards to the Division secretary any documents of long-term value not needed by the chair in the fulfillment of his or her duties. The committee chair sends thank-you letters to all committee members who have completed their terms of office. If completing his or her term of office, the committee chair prepares the files for transfer to the incoming chair no later than January 1. The committee chair begins drafting the committee annual report and accounting of finances for submission to the Division secretary in January. Note: The committee annual report should include an accounting of the past year's goals and objectives, as well as those planned for the coming year. If there is a change in committee chair, the outgoing chair drafts the portion of the report that refers to the past year and the incoming chair drafts the plan for the coming year.

The CCCE holds one open meeting and one members-only meeting at each Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE). The committee reports to the Executive Committee on an irregular basis.
