From the Secretary/Councilor, Resa Kelly, Fall 2015

Resa Kelly

Greetings DivCHED members! This summer has been a busy time for the Division and the Executive Committee! In addition to sipping umbrella drinks, lounging by the pool and contemplating the chemistry of sunscreen protection* we managed to accomplish several things that I am happy to share with you.

Intercession Events
During the intercession between the spring and fall meetings, Chair Towns requested the Committee on Personnel and Nominations (CPN) provide a slate of three candidates from which one person could be appointed to serve as the DivCHED representative on the newly formed American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT) board. The three candidates put forward by CPN were: Erica Posthuma-Adams, Roxie Allen and Laura E. Slocum. The Executive Committee appointed Roxie Allen to be its representative to the AACT Board. The Executive Committee wishes to thank all of the candidates for agreeing to run and Ms. Allen for accepting to serve for this one-year appointment.

Safety Committee – During the Spring ACS National meeting a motion was passed to create a new DivCHED committee charged with addressing safety concerns of the Division. During the intercession and with the assistance of CPN Chair - Jennifer Lewis, the Safety Committee, chaired by Dr. David Finster, was appointed 13 committee members. Congratulations to this newly formed committee of the Division.

Endowment of ACS Awards – The ACS Board Committee on Grants & Awards recognized and thanked the ACS Exams Institute, through its Board of Trustees, for endowing the ACS Award for Achievement in Research for the Teaching and Learning of Chemistry and the Journal of Chemical Education and ChemEDX, through the Board of Publication, for endowing the James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching. This is a significant event as it means that these awards are ensured to have permanent funding! The Division was recognized for being the first ACS technical division to endow, not one, but TWO national awards, and these endowments become effective for the 2017 presentation of the awards.

Fall Election
The Fall DivCHED election runs from September 1st through September 30th. As usual, you can expect that the election will run electronically with the assistance of Vote-Now.com so be on the lookout for an email from us with instructions for casting your votes. The slate of candidates for the 2015 DivCHED election are: Chair-Elect – Amina El Ashmaway and MaryKay Orgill; Councilor (1)/Alternate Councilor (2) – Patrick Daubenmire, Tom Higgins, Dan King, Sally Mitchell, Rick Moog, and Cinzia Muzzi. On behalf of the Division, I wish to thank all of these candidates for running!
