Dr. Laura Anna
Professor of Chemistry, Department Chair
Montgomery College (MD)
Two-year college

My experience and service contributions to the ACS Division of Chemical Education provide me with a strong background to continue to serve as a Councilor for the Division.  In my first term as an Alternate Councilor, I have had the opportunity to participate in DivCHED Executive Committee meetings and attend ACS Council meetings that inform and strengthen my knowledge of our Division and the broader ACS organization. My contributions to the Division include serving and co-chairing the DivCHED Committee on Personnel and Nominations and I have been a member of two ACS Examinations committees.  I regularly participate at ACS national meetings and have organized the CHED symposium “Strategies Promoting Success of Two-year College Students” since 2014 and was a co-organizer for the symposium “NMR Spectroscopy in the Undergraduate Curriculum.”  I have also enjoyed collaborating with colleagues to organize symposia at BCCE focused on student success in introductory chemistry and successful two-year and four-year college partnerships.

In my current role as Department Chair at Montgomery College, the largest two-year college in Maryland with the most diverse student population in the contiguous United States, I am fortunate to advocate for and guide students as they navigate through their introductory chemistry courses on their path towards STEM degrees and careers. Prior to my position at Montgomery College, I spent 14 years teaching organic chemistry at a four-year primarily undergraduate institution (PUI), giving me a broad perspective of faculty issues and student challenges at different types of institutions.  Thank you for your consideration and for the opportunity to continue to serve the Division of Chemical Education as a voice for chemical educators and students in our two-year college communities.
