From the Chair-Elect, Frank Torre, Spring 2012

We are looking for a few good men and women! Sound familiar? Actually it is taken from a marine recruiting slogan dating back to 1798 – a time before marines knew that women were just as capable as men. The ACS is a volunteer organization of about 164,000 members. Six thousand of those good men and women belong to the Division of Chemical Education.

As Chair-elect, I attended the ACS Leadership Training Conference in Dallas, TX, where I learned that the life blood of an organization like ours is its volunteers. If you search "volunteering" in Wikipedia, you will find "Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity, intended to promote good or improve human quality of life, but people also volunteer for their own skill development, to meet others, to make contacts for possible employment, to have fun…." (I especially like the having fun part!). I am inviting you to become an active volunteer in DivCHED. The division has nineteen standing committees all of which could benefit from the talents of a few good women and men. Go to the division website: www.divched.org and click on COMMITTEES tab to find out more about the different committees and what they do. Another tab to explore is, ABOUT CHED where you will find the operations manual which further describes committee responsibilities. If you get actively involved, you will help us to improve quality of DivCHED, you will develop your own skills, meet others in the division (networking) and, I assure you that you will have fun!

We are a group of like-minded people committed to improving chemical education. Many of us have devoted our careers to teaching chemistry and enjoy what we do. We feel like we make a difference in student's lives by showing them the wonders of chemistry and its importance in their lives. Why not get actively involved in a division that tries to further those ideals. Do it today! Contact Cinzia Muzzi, chair of the Committee on Personnel and Nominations, muzzicinzia@deanza.edu and ask about joining a committee. Please feel free to contact me with your ideas and suggestions on how to make improve DivCHED and better meet the needs of its membership.
