Launching a New ChemEdX Resource Hub for Chemistry Education Research Methods

The Chemistry Education Research (CER) community increasingly relies on theories, methodologies, and analytical approaches drawn from education, psychology, sociology, and related social science disciplines. Yet many researchers, instructors, graduate students, and emerging scholars face challenges in identifying accessible, chemistry-specific resources that can help them learn and apply these methods effectively. To address this need, the ACS Division of Chemical Education's CER Committee is exploring the development of a new ChemEdX Methods Resource Hub, a community-driven initiative designed to support methodological learning and capacity building across the field.

The proposed hub would feature concise reviews of influential methodology resources, including textbooks, seminal articles, methodological tools, and theoretical frameworks. Each review would provide an overview of the resource, discuss its strengths and limitations, describe relevant applications in chemistry education research, and offer guidance for potential users. Resources would be organized into searchable categories spanning qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches, as well as theoretical perspectives commonly used in CER.

By creating a centralized, open-access collection of method-focused resources on ChemEdX, the initiative aims to lower barriers to methodological training, particularly for early-career researchers, graduate students, faculty transitioning into CER, and scholars at teaching-focused or under-resourced institutions. The hub would also promote greater methodological rigor by helping researchers align research questions, theoretical frameworks, and research designs more effectively.

The effort would be community driven, with contributions from faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and methodological experts from across disciplines. Through collaboration between the CER Committee and the ChemEdX editorial team, the hub would serve as a living resource that evolves alongside the field and supports ongoing professional development. We are actively recruiting for individuals and teams willing to contribute a short 500-800 word review of a resource; please contact Elizabeth Day (elday@utep.edu) for more details.

Ultimately, the ChemEdX Methods Resource Hub represents an opportunity to strengthen the research infrastructure of chemistry education by making methodological expertise more accessible, visible, and actionable. As CER continues to grow as an interdisciplinary field, initiatives like this can help build a more inclusive, connected, and methodologically robust research community.
