The Committee on Computing in Chemical Education seeks to support and encourage the development, implementation, and assessment of computing technologies in Chemical Education. We support topical symposia and workshops at ACS meetings and support Online Chemistry Classes (OLCCs).
- The CCCE co-sponsored a symposium at the 2026 BCCE meeting, "Teaching Data-Driven Approaches in Chemistry". This multi-session event focused on a variety of computational tools and approaches in Chemistry education. This aligns with CHED Strategic Plan goal #2 (engage chemistry educators and education researchers at all levels in a wide range of high-quality, accessible learning experiences).
- We held a Meet & Greet session at the 2026 BCCE , with approximately 15 attendees. In addition to networking, we discussed ways for CCCE to better engage ACS members and will be working on those ideas in the upcoming months. This aligns with CHED Strategic Plan goal #1 (cultivate welcoming and responsive chemical education communities).
- We have completed our operations manual and will be submitting it to CHED by the end of summer 2026.
- We will be organizing a symposium for the ACS Spring 2027 meeting in New Orleans, titled "From Tools to Teaching: Practical Computational Activities for Chemistry Courses". This will align with CHED Strategic Plan goals 1, 2 & 3 (cultivate welcoming and responsive chemical education communities; engage chemistry educators and education researchers at all levels in a wide range of high-quality, accessible learning experiences; build and communicate the unique benefits and role of DivCHED).
- We will work on creating a new website, as the former website is no longer operational. This aligns with CHED Strategic Plan goals 1, 2 & 3 (cultivate welcoming and responsive chemical education communities; engage chemistry educators and education researchers at all levels in a wide range of high-quality, accessible learning experiences; build and communicate the unique benefits and role of DivCHED).
- We will be creating a roster of individuals interested in CCCE activities, to replace our old ListServe. This aligns with CHED Strategic Plan goal #2 (engage chemistry educators and education researchers at all levels in a wide range of high-quality, accessible learning experiences).
- We will recruit presentations for the ACS Spring 2027 (New Orleans), for the symposium "From Tools to Teaching: Practical Computational Activities for Chemistry Courses". The session will use a "flash talk" approach, to connect educators with computational resources they can use in their courses. This aligns with CHED Strategic Plan goals 1, 2 & 3 (cultivate welcoming and responsive chemical education communities; engage chemistry educators and education researchers at all levels in a wide range of high-quality, accessible learning experiences; build and communicate the unique benefits and role of DivCHED).
It is not clear if anyone submitted expenses for the Spring ACS meeting (a request for information has been submitted to the CHED treasurer). CCCE hosted a Meet & Greet at the 2026 BCCE meeting, with all 3 of the chairs in the succession attending.
The CCCE Meet & Greet at the 2026 BCCE meeting was run by Bonnie Hall & Derek Behmke. In addition to member networking, we are working on reviving the committee and its work (which went dormant during the pandemic). We discussed ways to better engage CHED members with the committee's work, and how CCCE can effectively support faculty working to incorporate computing in their courses.
