Introduction

INTRODUCTION/OPENING COMMENTS

Our committee’s purpose is to nominate DivCHED members for committee service and leadership opportunities within the Division. We seek to be inclusive of all members including chemical education practitioners and researchers across all levels of institutions. The committee tries to match the skills, experiences, and interests of individuals to service opportunities within the division.

Information Since Last Report

INFORMATION SINCE LAST REPORT

  • CPN made recommendations for re-appointments and new appointments to Division committees for 2024-2026 terms. In summary:
    • 66 vacant positions on committees (LRP not considered)
    • 27 individuals accepted reappointment invitations
    • 39 new individual appointments
  • ~24 individuals were recommended from the Get Involved Preference form submissions (total of 38 unique submissions). Many of these individuals had no prior Division service but expressed interest in getting involved in Division work.
  • ~15 individuals were recommended because their prior committee or division service, or experience matched committee needs
  • Thank you to Heather Johnson for her work in the committee appointment process.
  • The committee requested and received a new email address, nominations@divched.org so members receiving invitations can see that emails are legitimately from the Nominations Committee of the Division of Chemical Education. This account has been turned over to the new CPN Chair, Blain Mamiya.
  • CPN developed slates of candidates for the Chair-Elect and Councilor / Alternate-Councilor positions (2025-2027 terms). Slates will be presented to ExComm for approval during the March 2024 closed meeting.

Thank you to former committee members: Gail Webster, Laura Anna, and Arlene Russell for their service to the CPN.

Future Plans

PLAN(S) FOR FUTURE

  • Blain Mamiya has moved into the Chair role for the CPN.
    • Co-chair?
  • Fall 2024: CPN will develop slates of candidate for any vacant Board positions.
  • CPN will continue to ask that the Division make regular social media posts throughout the year advertising the nomination form as a way to get more members involved in service opportunities.
  • CPN will request to Heather Johnson to send CPN a regular download of nomination form submissions based on the recommended deadlines below:
    • Elected leadership positions: January 31 (send responses in Excel to CPN in early Feb)
    • Board appointments: June 30 (send to CPN early July)
    • Committee interest: September 30 (send to CPN early October)
  • Future recommendations for the Division Committee appointment process:
    • Continue Committee Chair survey piloted in 2023 to inform reappointment process and to gather input on needs/expertise/skills for new appointments that will benefit the work of the committee.
    • Form a sub-committee within CPN tasked with making committee appointments recommendations.

Heather Johnson has proposed a platform to streamline the invitation and acceptance process for committee appointments.

Other

OTHER

  • CPN continues to advise other Division committees to consider and develop chair succession planning within each committee to ensure smooth transition and continuity of committee work.
  • Also, this was in our last consent agenda, and it still seems relevant now:

CPN would like for ExComm to consider working with our committee (and perhaps other committees) to find intentional pathways for membership engagement. Not only would we like to find ways to "lift members up" through the division, we would like to have more formalized ways to broaden membership participation so that we are being more intentional about DEIR in the organization.

Did your committee request funding from DivCHED in the past budget year?
