The AACT Governing Board met July 14, 2023 with results as follows: -
● Discussion on : Engagement, Burnout, and Incentives
The group discussed increasing engagement of members while combatting burnout. Board members discussed creating more opportunities that are less time intense, sharing more resources, creating mentorships and anchors for teachers. They also talked about creating more pathways for teachers to become involved and will empower them,
● ACS Advocacy and Governance
The group had a presentation on advocacy and governance. Board members would like the staff to work on creating a position statement on class size for laboratory classes.
● Volunteering
Group discussions were held on the value of volunteering and staff was charged with creating a volunteer purpose statement.
● Meetings
Discussion was held on how to engage members at meetings. Suggestions were made for teachers days at regional meetings, the national meetings, and state science teachers groups.
Discussion was held on making ChemMatters more useful for more students especially at the middle school level.
The committee also discussed compensation for members submitting resources. This was an initial discussion and no decisions were made.
AACT currently has over 8000 members with 90% of those members in the K-12 classroom.
