Since my arrival in the US in the year 2000, my professional work has been dedicated to advancing chemistry education research and practice. My educational research efforts have focused on the characterization of the conceptual frameworks and patterns of reasoning used by chemistry students to answer questions and solve problems that require qualitative reasoning. On the practice side, we have worked for more than ten years in the development, implementation, and assessment of an alternative approach to the teaching of college general chemistry (Chemical Thinking). This work has resulted in more than 100 publications in chemistry education, many of them published in the Journal of Chemical Education (JCE), which contribute to inform and advance the work of chemistry educators around the world. As a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 2000, I have served as a reviewer of hundreds of manuscripts submitted to JCE and I am currently a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for that same journal. I am also a member of the Chemistry Education Research (CER) Committee from the ACS Division of Chemical Education, where I help coordinate dissemination efforts in the form of CER Webinars for the community. My service to the chemistry education research and practice community extends beyond the US boundaries as I serve in several editorial boards for diverse journals in Europe (CERP, International Journal of Science Education) and Latino America (Educación Química) and have organized and chaired the 2019 Gordon Research Conference in Chemistry Education Research and Practice which engaged researchers and educators from around the world. In recognition of my work, I was recently honored to be the recipient of the 2021 ACS Award for Achievement in Research for the Teaching & Learning of Chemistry.
