Introduction
The Committee on Computing in Chemical Education seeks to support and encourage the development, implementation, and assessment of computing technologies in Chemical Education. We support topical symposia and workshops at ACS meetings, oversee online conferences in the Chemical Sciences, ConfChems , and Online Chemistry Classes, OLCC.
Information Since Last Report
- Our name was changed to Committee on Computing in Chemical Education to better reflect our focus on software and computing technologies in Chemical Education
We decided on a chair succession plan: Past chair, Chair, Chair-elect; 1-year rotations for each, ensuring 3 people in leadership at a time. - We elected a new chair-elect, Dr. Bonnie Hall, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Grandview University
- We are organizing a CHED/CINF/COMP session on Cheminformatics Education Resources to be held at the Spring 2025 ACS National Meeting in San Diego. Scheduled Date: Sunday 3/23/25) (Coordinators: Bob Belford, Ashley Ringer, & Sunghwan Kim).
- We are holding a symposium on AI in Chemical Education to be held at the Spring 2025 ACS National Meeting in San Diego. Scheduled Date: Wednesday, 3/26/25, 8am – 12pm. (Coordinator: Derek Behmke)
- We have set up a nanoHub to host OLCCs (Coordinator: Bob Belford)
- We are preparing a new OLCC on Data Chemistry and Machine Learning to be offered in Fall 2025 academic semester. (Coordinator: Robert Belford)
- We continue to work on developing recommendations of best practices for using AI in chemical education
- We are collaborating with MolSSI to develop short courses / symposia related to computing in Chemical Education (Coordinator: Bonnie Hall)
- We continue to work on developing a survey to be sent to DivCHED, AACT, CHEMEd and others to gain ideas on what we would like to be working on in the coming years.
Future Plans
- We plan on having two virtual meetings this year. One in May to plan for the upcoming Spring 2026 ACS meeting and BCCE 2026, and another in August to plan for the Fall 2026 ACS meeting and BCCE 2026.
- 2026 marks the 30-yr anniversary of the OLCCs. We will discuss how we plan to celebrate this milestone.
