From the Safety Committee – Spring 2026

The Safety Committee has been working with the Office of Safety Programs (OSP), Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS), the journal ACS Chemical Health and Safety, and the Committee on Chemical Safety (CCS) to work on joint programming and several publications.

On of the editorials the leadership of the safety organization published, Chemical Safety Ecosystem of the American Chemical Society: A Primer (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.chas.5c00201), may be of interest as it outlines the history and roles of the various safety committees in the ACS.

Another publication for our organic chemists is a recent paper, Grignard Reaction Laboratory Reaction Safety Summary (LRSS): A Practical Resource for Chemists in ACS Chemical Health & Safety (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.chas.5c00216).  This publication is the first in an upcoming series on applying the RAMP safety framework to analyze protocols used in our laboratories.

The Safety Committee also has several events planned for the upcoming BCCE in Madison, WI.  We have a safety symposium in the technical program, a Birds of a Feather session to talk about safety education in our classrooms, and a professional development workshop Integrating RAMP®-Based Chemical Safety Education Across the Chemistry Curriculum.  As the schedule for the BCCE is still in development, look for these events to add to your conference calendar.  We hope to see you at the BCCE!

As always, if you have safety related questions or would like to share suggestions for resources or programming, we invite your comments.  We are always looking for new faces for the Safety Committee and would welcome you to join us.  Please complete the ‘Join a Committee’ form on the DivCHED website or contact the committee chair and we will get you plugged into the committee.
