The Board of Publication advances the publication mission of the Division. We support the management of the Journal of Chemical Education via a publication agreement with the American Chemical Society and the operations, finances, and sustainability of the Chemical Education Xchange. These two publications provide national and international reach for chemistry education research and practice.
The Spring 2024 meeting was held in-person with virtual access. Standing reports were given by BoP Treasurer (Frank Torre), JCE EIC (Tom Holme), and ChemEd X EIC (Jon Holmes). Meeting highlights include:
- Announcement of the next Chair of BoP, Debbie Herrington, was received with great enthusiasm. Her two-year term starts in the Spring 2025.
- Sponsorship and participation at the BCCE University of Kentucky was discussed and approved. Requested sponsorship was increased to the $5,000 level. Debbie Herrington submitted an abstract for the informational symposium entitled “Inside the Division of Chemical Education”. The talk will highlight the evolving tasks of the BoP, a year in the life of a BoP member, and how to get involved with the BoP.
- The updated version of the Operations Manual is expected to be approved in Fall 2024. It will be circulated prior to the Fall meeting to the BoP members in advance. The major changes involve ChemEdX operations.
- Jon Holmes presented to the Board the specifics of the upcoming changes to the organizational structure of ChemEdX including the budgetary implications and the technology-based company chosen, BlueSpark. The agreements will be reviewed by the Chair succession and legal team.
Mechanisms to have a leadership succession in place for BoP is a priority. Restructure and organization of ChemEdX should be in place by the Fall 2024.
