Introduction

The Goal of the New Member Committee is to perform functions and implement and sustain policies, programs, and activities that welcome and meet the needs of new members of the Division of Chemical Education. To help us meet our goal, we encourage new members of the Division to contact the committee chair with ideas for new activities or programs that would help meet your needs.

We also (try to) staff the Division poster at National & Regional ACS meetings - though in recent years, none of the committee members have attended those meetings.

Information Since Last Report

The NMC sent out the needs assessment to the division membership earlier this summer and presented some findings at the BCCE on 7/31/24.  Key findings are summarized in the PowerPoint file that will be attached to this report.  We had some good conversations with attendees at the BCCE symposium, including a suggestion to consider placing some resources behind a paywall that only Division members can access.  (Some attendees favored this idea and some definitely did not.)

Future Plans
  • Meet with Strategic Plan team members to collaborate on one strategy for each of the three broad goals outlined in the Strategic Plan.
  • Identify new committee chair for term beginning January 2025 (current chair will rotate off after 9 years on the committee).
  • Coordinate with ACS Membership folks to see if we can get demographic information for division membership, as that information was not available from the division directly.  We are interested in knowing whether our survey sample was representative, and the division should have that information anyway.
  • Deeper analysis of survey responses to determine any additional suggestions for the division moving forward.
