Introduction

The Committee on Chemistry in Two-Year Colleges (COCTYC) is the executive committee governing the Two-Year College Chemistry Consortium, 2YC3. 2YC3 is an external membership organization charged with enhancing student learning by providing a national forum for educators teaching in the first two years of college chemistry. The COCTYC facilitates 2YC3 goals by coordinating professional development conferences, webinars, and community forums while also publishing newsletters and providing online resources.

Information Since Last Report

The proposed vision, mission and goals proposed at a 2023 Strategic Planning Retreat were adopted.

  • Vision:  Advance first- and second- year college chemistry education
  • Mission: Build community, support professional development and advocate for first and second-year college chemistry faculty
  • Goals:

o   Goal 1 – Build Community

o   Goal 2 – Professional Development

o   Goal 3 - Advocate

A strategy under Goal 1 Build Community was to restructure the Executive board to build capacity and support collaborative leadership. In December 2024, the COCTYC Executive Board voted to adopt new by-laws, policies and procedures governing the leadership and organization of 2YC3. Key structural changes include:

  • Expands the Executive Board to up to 15 members (currently 9 members).
  • Members to the Executive Board will be elected from the general membership to be held in October of every year.
  • Following the general election, the Board will select and approve the roles of Chair, Secretary, Membership Coordinator and Committee Chairs (up to 7). Remaining board members will be considered Members-at-Large (up to 3).
  • Treasurer and Webmaster roles will be appointed by a majority vote of the Board.
  • The COCTYC Chair will be the representative to DivCHED.

Proposed permanent committees to be be established to fulfill the mission and vision of 2YC3 include:

  1. Advocation Committee
  2. In-Person Conference Committee
  3. Webinar Conference Committee
  4. Communications and Community Committee
  5. Strategic Planning Committee

We are excited about the opportunity to expand leadership and member involvement.

Future Plans

Our Friday Webinar series continues for Spring 2025 with a total of 6 presentations. All presentations are on a Friday starting at 1100 Pacific time (= noon Mountain = 1:00pm Central = 2:00pm Eastern). These webinars, co-sponsored by ChemEd Xchange and College Chemistry Canada (C3), provide timely professional development and networking for all chemical educators. Registration is free and open to anyone: http://www.2yc3.org/meetings.htm

We are excited to announce our return to in-person meetings with the 225th 2YC3 Conference, May 30-31, 2025, hosted by Johnson County Community College in Overlook Park, Kansas. The conference theme “Using High Impact Practices to Empower Chemistry Students” will bring together chemical educators with a focus on the first two years of college chemistry.

We are exploring options for a Fall 2025 Meeting near Washington DC to coincide with the Fall 2025 ACS meeting.

We will be working to establish our proposed standing committees and recruit volunteers interested in getting involved in the new leadership and committee structure of 2YC3.

The 2YC3 revenue model is primarily membership driven. Current memberships year to date have risen slightly since the BCCE 2024 conference.  We are addressing our revenue model along with our membership structure as a result of the strategic planning retreat. A new tiered model has been proposed that would be structured with 3 options:

1)      Basic free membership

2)      Paid individual membership ($25) for voting privileges and member-only access to resources and benefits (i.e. webinar recordings, professional development credit for conference participation, discounted registration fees, travel awards)

3)      An institutional membership option that would provide a discounted fee structure based on total number of individuals from one institution.

Note: The new ByLaws adopted in December 2024 moved the 2024 board committee members onto the executive board until the first election in October 2025.

Did your committee request funding from DivCHED in the past budget year?
Yes
YES: Enter amount received with any comments.

The 2YC3 executive board did not request any funds from DivCHED via the normal annual process. There was a Special Projects request for $5000 in matching funds for our first in person conference since the pandemic.  This $5000 is being used to offer ten faculty $500 stipends to attend the May meeting at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.  2YC3 is extremely thankful for this support of our members and our commitment to in person professional development opportunities.

What did you do with this funding in the past year?

Meeting will be held in May 2025.

What were the outcomes of the activities funded by your allocation?

Meeting will be held in May 2025.
